What about supplements?

Last week’s blog explored why medications have a time and place. This week, we’re shifting the focus to supplements—something most people already have strong opinions about.
What Is a Supplement? Merriam-Webster defines a supplement as something that adds to something else or makes it complete. That definition becomes especially relevant when we consider the world we live in today.
Many people believe a balanced diet eliminates the need for supplements. In an ideal world, that might be true. Dr. Mark Hyman explains in The Ultra-Mind Solution: Fix Your Broken Brain By Healing Your Body First: “If people eat wild, fresh, organic local, non-genetically modified food grown in virgin mineral and nutrient-rich soils that has not been transported across vast distances and stored for months before being eaten...and work and ive outside, breathe only fresh unpolluted air, drink only pure, clean water, sleep nine hours a night, move their bodies every day, and are free from chronic stressors and exposure to environmental toxins, then it is possible that they may not need supplements. Because we live in a fast-paced society where we pick up food on the fly, skip meals, eat sugar-laden treats, buy processed foods, and eat foods that have been chemically treated, we could use a little help from multiple vitamin/mineral supplements.”
Do those comments made by Dr. Mark Hyman make you think supplements become not just helpful, but necessary?
Those “clean” conditions simply don’t reflect modern life.
Why Supplements Matter Today Between processed foods, environmental toxins, nutrient-depleted soil, and fast-paced living, supplements help fill the gaps. They don’t replace healthy habits—they complete them.
When I received my own brain scan results, two supplements appeared repeatedly: Omega-3 fatty acids and a quality multivitamin. As an Amen University graduate, I recommend three foundational supplements that support every brain:
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Vitamin D
- Multivitamin/mineral
Omega-3 Fatty Acids Your brain is 70-80% water. Of the dry weight that is left, about 60% is fat. That’s why eating healthy fats is important. Omega-3s are essential for keeping your brain healthy. Research shows Omega-3s can improve memory, support blood flow, stabilize mood, reduce inflammation, and slow age-related brain shrinkage. Omega-3s contain two key compounds—EPA and DHA—and your brain needs both.

Vitamin D You can get vitamin D through sunlight, food, or supplements. Deficiency is still extremely common worldwide. Beyond bone health, Vitamin D plays a critical role in cognitive clarity, emotional balance, and neurological function. Ask your doctor to check your levels, it’s simple and important.
Multivitamin Per Dr. Hyman, our environment and food supply no longer provide the full spectrum of nutrients our bodies and brains need. A high-quality multivitamin helps replenish essentials like magnesium, potassium, and other micronutrients that support your brain and body.
