Invisible Disability

I stepped off the runway at Sanford Orlando Aiport and entered the terminal. I spotted a sign with a sunflower. Curious as I am, I wanted to learn more.

This was my first time learning the sunflower represents Invisible Disability at airports. Finally, the needle is moving. Mental disability is given the same recognition as physical disability.

I have always loved sunflowers. They are yellow, and this is my favorite color. After doing some research on sunflowers, I love what I learned.

There’s something about a sunflower that draws attention without trying. It stands tall, follows the light, and holds its head high even on cloudy days. Across time and cultures, the sunflower has come to represent more than its appearance; it embodies values that many people strive to live by: faith, warmth, and strength.

In short: the sunflower meaning is devotion, loyalty, warmth, and resilience. It comes from heliotropism, the way a young sunflower turns to follow the sun, and from the plant's long history as a food crop that produces abundance from poor ground. Those two things, one botanical and one agricultural, explain almost every meaning the flower has been given anywhere in the world.

A couple of quotes to remember:

"Be a sunflower in a field of roses; stand tall, radiate positivity and embrace your uniqueness".
This quote tells us there is power in being yourself, celebrating and embracing yourself is true power, just like the sunflower proudly blooms even when in a mixed sunflower bouquet, embrace who you are, and ignore the chaos and the noise; that's how you shine.

"Like a sunflower, always follow the light within you and bloom boldly."
Meaning you have to trust the light within you, and your capabilities and work towards your success; you do not need any affirmations from without, you have everything you need to succeed already!

Today, at the airport, I walk down the disabled line, because I wear a sunflower lanyard.

What’s your favorite flower and what is it’s significance? What does it represent?
